Moving Day in Emporia

Moving Day in Emporia

Dynamic Disc Open – Round Two

Sunday, May 5, 2024 - 01:41

Moving Day.

In parlance, “moving day” typically refers to the second-to-last day of a golf (or disc golf) tournament. It’s the day when players “make a move” to place themselves in contention for the final round. Whether appropriate or not, most followers of the event expect separation among the contenders, and a clearer picture of what might play out during the competition’s final round.

But…

What if the field “moves” together.

Saturday at the DGPT – Dynamic Discs Open,  one could argue that movement – action – certainly took place. But on the leaderboard, clarity cannot be found. Given the scoring opportunities – and scoring pitfalls – at Champions Landing, any of 10 or more competitors in either division have a realistic shot at the crown.

FPO

When Saturday began in cold, dreary conditions, five FPO players were tied at the head of the field at 1-under-par. After the second round,  just two of those players – Hailey King and Missy Gannon – retain a share of the lead, joined by Lisa Fajkus. All sit at 2-under for the championship. Holyn Handley at 1-under is the only other player in the field under par, and will join the trio on Sunday’s lead card.

MPO

Ricky Wysocki began Saturday’s second round alone in first place. He ended the day in the same position, but, with a 6-under-par effort, he did not distance himself from his closest pursuers. Neither did Calvin Hamburg, who likewise began and ended the day in second, also shooting a 6-under round. Behind them, the pursuers – thanks to 7- and 8-under-par days – crowded into contention, with Gavin Rathbun and Ezra Robinson besting the rest for a spot on the final-round lead card.

The chances for delay-causing weather for Sunday have decreased in the Emporia, Kansas area. Comfortable temperatures and the possibility of a third wind direction in as many days should make for an entertaining final day of competition at Champions Landing.
